The Muso Mirror is a simple invention that could revolutionise the way we learn to play an instrument. Alphonso Archer, a piano, guitar and drum teacher based in Calne, a small town in the southwest of England, invented the Muso Mirror in 2014. Since learning the guitar as a child, Alphonso had always practised in front of a mirror, even if it meant fighting off the six other children in his house. As he grew up and began teaching music professionally, he would always encourage his pupils to do the same.
In some cases, however, it just wasn’t possible. Some pupils didn’t have a suitable mirror in their house, while others grew bored of having to practise in the bathroom. Alphonso’s solution was to design a mirror that could be attached to a music stand. After a few homemade versions, the first Muso Mirror prototype was born.
A pivotal moment came when Alphonso shared his homemade version with his dear friend Rick O’Shea, passionate about the guitar with an infectious love for music. Rick immediately recognised its potential and introduced Alphonso to John Jackett at Altex Engineering, paving the way for commercial production. Rick became a tireless supporter, helping Alphonso with business trips to the USA and China, and continually urging him with his blunt but inspiring motto to “just f...ing do it.”
Rick sadly passed away on 19th July 2025, but his engaging personality and unwavering encouragement remain at the heart of the Muso Mirror story. It was because of Rick’s belief and support that the Muso Mirror was launched, and his legacy continues to guide its growth as Alphonso looks to expand in the USA and worldwide.
Since its launch, the Muso Mirror has been showcased at some of the biggest music product trade shows in the world, including London’s Music & Drama Education Expo, Frankfurt’s Musikmesse and NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) in California.
Among supporters of the Muso Mirror are Leslie DeShazor, violinist in Stevie Wonder’s orchestra, Allen Matthews of the Classical Guitar Shed, and Guitarist Magazine, who called the invention “disarmingly simple”.
The Muso Mirror has been sold in many countries, including the UK, US, France, Italy, Canada, Australia and Denmark. It is available in two models, the Muso Mirror Quick Starter and the Muso Mirror One-Stop. It is suitable for guitarists, saxophonists, flautists, drummers, violinists, vocalists and more.

I have been using my Muso Mirror consistently while practicing the classical guitar. It gives me a good view of both hands. Even with its great adjustability I am still trying to get angles the give me the most accurate view of what is going on. What a fantastic product! I have been looking for something like this for years. I ordered the Quick Starter and attached it to an old mic stand so I can easily adjust the height. My beginner strings were fighting over who got to use it in rehearsal, and you could really see and hear the difference in their bow angles right away! I’ve also got some private cello students preparing for exams, and even a short session of scales with “Milo the mirror” (kids named him already!) set them off on the path to clearer tone and better posture!
